There are approximately 20 private radio stations throughout Albania and slightly fewer television stations, most of which are regional. Radio services in Albanian from the BBC, Deutsche Welle, Radio France Internationale, Radio Free Europe and the Voice of America are available on FM or medium wave (AM). Sensationalism is often the norm in the print media. Political parties, trade unions and various societies publish their own newspapers; dependence on outside revenue tends to limit their objectivity.
The Reporters Without Borders Worldwide Press Freedom Index 2007 ranks press freedom in Albania in the last position in Europe. The reports of this organization in the recent years have pointed out a negative trend with regards to the media conditions in Albania. From the 34th position in 2003, Albania has moved down to the 87th position in 2007, next to countries like Cambodia and Niger. The report shows that only during the year 2006-2007 the country has gone 7 positions lower.
